Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte ('VLV') is the largest private residence listed as a historic building in France, 34 miles southeast of Paris. The estate has belonged to four successive families and is currently owned by the family of Count and Countess de Vogüé. Vaux-le-Vicomte was designed in 1656 by Louis Le Vau for Nicolas Fouquet, who was finance minister to King Louis XIV. The château, finished in 1661, is considered to be one of the masterpieces of French Baroque residential architecture and a signature of the 'Louis XIV style'. The château is the predecessor of Versailles and was a trailblazer for innovative modern architecture in its day.
